Voordelen: "I had a very bad experience on checking in. I went to check in at Beijing Capital airport over 1 hour (about at least 65-70 minutes) earlier than the time of taking off on Nov. 2, However, I wasn’t allowed to check in. The staff said I was late and asked me to spend extra $200 to reschedule my flight. Therefore I had to spend $200 on changing my flight to next day on November 3, which was one day late back to Boston than I expected. That’s too bad and incredible!"
Nadelen: "There are a couple of things need to be improved. First of all, the food were not fresh, especially the salad dish. In mean dish, the beef cooked with too much dark source and tasted salty. Hope you could improve the food quality near future! Secondly, the luggages came out too late. All passengers had waited for their luggages for more than 1hour, which was really too long. Please consider about the concerns! Thanks!"
Voordelen: "The flight per se is not too bad. But the transit in Beijing is horrible. A shuttle bus ran almost 20 minutes to get us from landing spot to luggage pick up and waited another 20 min to get our luggage. We almost missed our next flight and the airport staff didn't want to help at all."

We had to go through security twice to do this. The flight was not changed to the correct time on the board until it was boarding for the scheduled time. Meanwhile we worried we would miss our next flight. HU7606 May 26, 2018. Very stressful."

I was met by an airline representative near the plane with a special bus and accompanied through all the bureaucracy very quickly. Excellent airline staff."

Earbuds were handed out. You couldn't hear even 1 word out of ten. There was no stereo sound; only the left ear had sound."

Nadelen: "Everything else was sub-par or terrible, especially to return home (see below). Of the 3 flights I took on Hainan Airlines, 2 were international and 1 was domestic (within China). Generally speaking, the service was terrible-- especially the international flights. On the first flight from Chicago to Beijing, I was traveling with my 8-year-old. Unfortunately, she spilled her drink all over the seat. We struggled to communicate our needs to clean up the spill, as no one spoke English. This may not be surprising for a China-based company, but flights to the United States should include staff with limited English skills. Not only did the staff not appreciate our needs for a basic issue (providing TWO cocktail napkins), they did absolutely nothing to help deal with the situation. To make matters worse, we did not receive our meal-of-choice for either the initial meal or the pre-arrival meal. I found this surprising, since we were served relatively early in the economy class cabin. The domestic flight was another issue. In short, the flight was delayed more than 6 hours for weather. While not Hainan's fault, our departure gate was changed THREE times in 6 hours -- causing significant frustration. Several passengers even fought with the gate agent before the police were called. Finally, our return flight was the worst of all three legs. Again, we did not receive our meal–of– choice. Trying to please my 8-year-old, I asked for the fish. I was a matter-of-factly told that there was no more fish. When I pushed the issue, they "miraculously" found fish, ten feet away on the cart in the next aisle. I asked if he could check for second fish, and the flight attendant acted perturbed. He told me that he cannot make any guarantees, but he would check. I never got the fish -- and he NEVER bothered to check back to see if I would like any of the other entrées. We were then presented with long stretches (i.e., hours) with very little to drink. We were given drinks maybe three times over the course of 12 hours, but I was dying of thirst, made worse by the hot and stuffy cabin. When the flight attendant came by the third time, he provided ice to the person across the aisle. Surprised by seeing ice for the first time I'm 3 legs, I also asked for ice. Again, I was told "we have no more ice. I responded with, "Of course you don't." His response – "is there a problem?" When I expressed my disappointment, he simply walked off. I then got his attention again and pointed out that he never returned with an entrée. Again, no response. In short, the flights are cheap, but I would suggest another airline."

Nadelen: "Flight left and arrived by bus to the plain. I hate that..."
Voordelen: "This was my second experience with H.A., the first being in February. The entertainment selections are quite extensive and I enjoy them, and they do a good job boarding people. Plus I like the comfort bag (sleep mask, ear plugs, toothbrush and toothpaste, etc.) that H.A. provides."
Nadelen: "I found this trip lacking. First, the gate at which we were to wait for the airplane did not have enough seats and so many people had to look elsewhere. Further, the lights were out, giving a shadowed, unused-like quality. Fortunately boarding took place relatively quickly, but I was very disappointed with the arrival at the gate. I look forward to the meals that H.A. provides during the flight, but neither the dinner nor the breakfast main meals were tasty. I've had four trips now -- to and from China twice -- and this was by far the worst. I hope it is not repeated, H.A. really did a good job on my flight to the U.S. in January 2017. Further, the seat felt cramped and it was hard to relax. But the main problem was that H.A. actually ran out of soda towards the end of the flight, which was a real negative given that many of us were thirsty at that time. I found the show of sympathy from the Chinese flight attendant rather forced on this issue. NOT good."
Voordelen: "Flight was canceled but didn't know it because of internet restrictions in China. Communication throughout the entire 13 hour ordeal of trying to get to Beijing and getting another flight to the United States was poor. Observation is that international flights seem much better than domestic fligbts."
Nadelen: "Need to pick up all my luggages at Chongqing airport and use the cart to carry all luggages from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2. It's a LONG way. Why can they auto transfer all my luggages from Hainan Airlines to Beijing Capital Airlines? They even didn't mention the transfer process when I bought the ticket. That's too bad."
Nadelen: "the ticket counter would not give us our boarding passes. With a flight at 7 am and at the counter at 5 am the counter said we were too late. However, we watched as they kept giving others, the Chinese citizens, their tickets. They then walked us to the other side of the airport and left us at a China southern counter and told us to purchase all new tickets. For three hours we negotiated with them that we already had tickets. In the end, Hainan would. It grant us any. Parsing passes. We missed our flight and had to purchase new tickets through China Southern."
Voordelen: "The seat is ok"
Nadelen: "The first flight was canceled with no reason. No one sent me a notice and we had to beg the crew to find us a different airline to fly with. There was dellay in both flights. Will think twice next time before buying a ticket with Hainan Airlines"
Voordelen: "I upgraded to business class. The crew was very helpful in the process. I had a fantastic experience. Loved the food. Entertainment options are slightly limited... I didn't watch any of the movies anyway."
Nadelen: "Chongqing airport is a mess. Poorly designed and managed. Also there was no Hainan staff to be seen on the ground, which is unhelpful. All the check-in and boarding are managed by airport employees, who are completely unable to answer any questions. Boarding was at a remote gate and very chaotic. No line whatsoever."
Voordelen: "Hainan crew work diligently in serving the travelers and meeting their needs. Their food choices were good and the food was delicious. I am a frequent coach flyer between North America and China, I can say the drinks they provided to the main cabin were better than any other airlines I have flown. Red and white wine, Hennessy, red label vodka, beers, etc. soft drinks, juices, etc. It was clean and pleasant."
Voordelen: "i booked a seat on the phone but it was denied at boarding. i am really disappointed. also the online check in system doesn't work at all."
Voordelen: "Seat pitch better than many others in economy. Free inflight WiFi was great!"
Nadelen: ""Hollywood" and "New Releases" sections were empty, so only two English language movies for a 12 hour flight."
Voordelen: "Staff and crew remained polite and professional in the face of some difficult, older Floridians (Sorry to all of the decent Floridians out there). One young flight attendant made a HUGE effort to turn around their mood. He wasn't very successful, but it was a valiant attempt."
Nadelen: "Boarding was a little stressful, but I think that had more to do with some belligerent, unprepared travelers than the staff and crew."
Nadelen: "The food before landing tasted bad. There supposed to be two choices, but there was only rice left and it tasted terrible. The other was served out."
Voordelen: "Specifically called and reserved a window seat, then checked at the Hainan Airlines check-in desk while I picked up boarding passes and at the gate to ensure I had a window seat. I got a "window seat," but my row didn't actually have a window-- it was just a structural wall. That was a disappointment."

Nadelen: "Checked 2 bags in Guangzhou. Waited over 1 hour in Beijing for bags. Only the smaller bag arrived. Baggage check desk says the larger bag did not get on plane because malfunction of computer tag. My missing bag will come on next flight to Beijing but will not make it in time for my departing plane to Seattle per baggage clerk. A missing bag was filed w Hainan Air. No attempt was made to correct the situation by Hainan. Alaska air was much more helpful even though the situation was caused by Hainan!"

Nadelen: "The connection btween Shangjai and Beijing was terriblle. On my way to Shanghai from Beijing I missed my flight because of your airline. There was no one to help me to resolve the problem. I am an experince traveler and never had this attitude from an airline before."

Nadelen: "My luggage never made it to Tokyo. I have tried calling lost and found multiple times but nobody ever picks up. I have emailed them multiple times with no response. Everything I brought for my 2 month trip in Japan was in there. This has brought nothing but stress. I just want some sort of answer"
Voordelen: "Their business class is great. When we had to change planes in Beijing (we flew from Shanghai to Chicago by way of Beijing), they sent someone to guide us from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2. Since most of the signs at the airport were not that understandable, it relieved us of stress. And, of course, it's nice to be picked up by limousine and driven to the airport! And flat beds, excellent food, caring flight attendants."

Nadelen: "Seat is hard, food is not good. Not many new movies that people can watch."
Nadelen: "I have to take my own big luggage to catch next flight. Not convenient."
Nadelen: "One of our bags didn't arrive to chengdu, we had to spend our own time and money in order to pick it up the day after our flight. I think the appropriate way was to send it to the place where we are staying or at least compensate us for the taxie fee to the airport and back."
Voordelen: "No..no redeeming features.."
Nadelen: "Coffee was the worst I've ever had. The 2+1 powdered mil and coffee stick. Truly awful. But i suppose there aren't many people on the flight who would order coffee..I would even pay extra for a coffee if they had a quality option. Food is comparable to a school canteen. I would probably pay 20rmb for this in Shanghai. Frozen butter for the half-frozen bread. They really couldn't do worse..."

Nadelen: "Flight crew let the woman seated next to me shove 2 bags down by her feet, one of which she straddled between her knees during takeoff/landing. Not one of them told her it was a safety violation and asked her to put her back in a bin."

Nadelen: "I had booked the free hotel for when you have more than 8 hours on the layover. I got to the airport to find that because I didn’t have a US passport, I couldn’t take advantage of the hotel, although my wife who is American, could have chosen to. So we stayed for 9 hours in the airport, and then boarded another 10 hour flight to NZ. It would have been useful to know the limitations, and maybe even get some kind of voucher for food or a lounge from the airline since they could have told me about the passport restrictions."

Nadelen: "The airline is always late, and you will consistently miss connecting flights. They will do nothing to accommodate you, or make your wait for the next flight any better. They've lost my luggage on 30% of my flights with them. Also, the entertainment system and selection is dated, and the food is hit or miss."

Never recommend again."

Nadelen: "Plane was late, causing me to miss flight in LA; I had requested an aisle seat but got placed in a the middle of a row of four seats, with a large man on one side and a Chinese woman on the other who both kept encroaching on my very limited space. I had no room, could not sleep and the entertainment (TV) for my seat was non-functional."

I did not have enough space in my seat 38A because the neighbor leaned constantly over to me. I moved away to a seat where there was no movie."

Voordelen: "The Chinese people were wonderful! But I was required to pass thru security checks 3 times arriving. 3 times transiting and 3 times leaving. At customs, transit and departure. No common sense to their process only"letter of the law". For example I was taking beef jerky to my friends in Thailand but the Chinese security has a meat sniffing dog and they confiscated it as well as the girl in front of me More than $100 worth of jerky. They should have given it back at departure gate. I had to buy more in their duty free shop. Also they cancelled my flight without advising me but did get me on Thai airways later that day. Too much hassle to Transit China"

Voordelen: "This leg was continuation of flight that began in Xiamen. Same plane and crew. 787 Dreamliner layout is efficient, generous legroom and recline is better than American carriers. Crew works as team, fast and courteous. Very helpful and professional, Water offered frequently, trash pick up kept cabin neat, bathrooms always clean. Passenger announcements are clear and crisp is English and Chinese."
Nadelen: "Really, no complaints. More entertainment choices would be appreciated however is not my priority."

The signage in English is poor or nonexistant. The overall level of English for the airport staff is very poor. One goes upstsirs/downstairs nunerous times. Because the second portion of WF858 is domestic flight, the passenger needs to exit the terminal and re-enter as an international passenger. Numerous security and passport lines. I found the movie selection to be poor with few non-violent movies available. Will not fly this route again."
Nadelen: "The check in staff did not let me check in and denied to support me! The reason was that my first name, middle name and last name were written in English order, not in Chinese order! I want my money back! All of my plan and meetings in Xiamen were cancelled!"
Voordelen: "Clean plane. Left on time. A little more seat room than many other carriers."
Nadelen: "Poor selection of movies. Want more light comedy"
Voordelen: "1. Friendly crew and attention 2. Affordable direct flight from LAX to XMN 3. Good timing"
Nadelen: "1. Seat cushion is too thin, resulting in painful butt after 12-14 hrs flight 2. The in-seat screen doesn't tilt, thus when front passenger reclined seat, the screen is right in front of your face (less than 5-inches). You need to crank your neck down to watch any programming which results in neck pain 3. Entertainment and food have much room to improve"
Nadelen: "I was very sick and contagious and asked for a single person hotel room for the night before a connecting flight. It was not accommodated. It would have cost extra 100-200 yuan. Then when we asked for the shuttle to the hotel, the security at the departures level meant we could not exit and be picked up. No one could arrange pick up at arrivals. Instead we paid for a taxi ourselves. Poor service and coordination, especially considering I could barely talk and just badly needed a rest."
Nadelen: "u had to transfer ur luggages even though its the same airline. what a joke? u had to get through numerous security points to get through the airport what the hell?"
Voordelen: "Kept me well hydrated, supplied tissues that helped me bear a long flight while sick. Early arrival appreciated. Fresh fruit was good."
Nadelen: "Crew might have cleared away medications by mistake but they tried hard to find it, inquired all attendants and even looked through the trash. I missed the passing of of declaration forms twice while I was in the bathroom and when we landed the customs people directed me wrong so I had to wait a long time in line to get through customs without water which made me sicker and I had to go to the doctor."
Voordelen: "Friendly and eager to serve crew"
Nadelen: "Lack of variety on food choices"
Voordelen: "I liked the plane. 787’s are the smoothest rides."
Nadelen: "Xiamen Airlines should be applauded for having a direct flight from LA to Qingdao. But they have a lot to learn about the proper service and materials in business class. Not surprisingly, they have gone for the cheapest way to service the customer. Lot to learn."
Voordelen: "Nice wide seats, well run flight. Lots of food served, though very mixed quality. The unfortunate experiences described in the negatives of this review, do not repeat on the return flight."
Nadelen: "In the fine print is the fact that the flight includes a stop in Shenzen. On the outbound flight this was a nightmare experience with Chinese immigration. Exhausted from a 14 hour flight, passengers had their passports taken away; were put through a bizarre 45 minute finger printing process using machines that did not work; and then left to wait for an hour or more with no information. The continuation flight was in another part of the airport - a very long walk; and it turned out not to be at the departing gate that was displayed on the monitors. We arrived at the indicated (wrong) gate with no guidance. Very nearly missed the continuation flight. Once in Xiamen, our arrival was late enough that the second floor of the airport was closed. There were no ATMs on the first floor; no way to get the Chinese cash needed to take a taxi to the airport. Fortunately a kind citizen agreed to exchange some cash, using mental calculations and sign language about the exchange rate."
Voordelen: "Seat were comfortable , staff friendly"
Nadelen: "The long layover"
Voordelen: "Two meals plus sandwich in between were enough to keep me from getting hungry."
Nadelen: "Boarding line was too long. There was no grouping which means there was a bit of disorder. A check-in counter agent was super slow. Other agents had a supervisor watching over their shoulders so they were much more efficient. The flight ran out of hot tea... but got refilled later. Need more tea cuz most passengers were Chinese."
Voordelen: "Crew are nice and friendly."
Nadelen: "Not a nice experience for a 5 hour flight. I don't understand the comments people are posting regarding the entertainment, it was just one poor Chinese movie, no choice at all. Food was poor. Seats were old and not at all spacious. Thankfully i had an empty seat next to me. This was just like a regular China domestic flight."
Voordelen: "The food was surprisingly good. I would have expected some of it from a restaurant, not an airline. The in-seat entertainment was functional and had a lot of things to watch and games to play."
Nadelen: "Nothing really. We have to keep in mind that an airline can only do so much to help us get through flights that are many hours long. This Xiamen flight was about as good as I can imagine a long international flight could be."
Voordelen: "The food was good and staff was friendly"
Nadelen: "I was denied a boarding pass and was not allowed to transit through China, because of a visa that was needed I was not told about by Kayak.com. Therefore, being the last day I was allowed to stay in Thailand, I had to scramble to find an outbound flight the same day, including paying almost double the cost of the original flight. The Thai check-in agent told me to never transit through mainland China again, because the visa requirement information that is not provided."
Voordelen: "Crews, food. Also Transfer Lounge in Xiamen is a good place without charge."
Nadelen: "Boarding because we have to take bus at Xiamen airport.Also, security checks at Xiamen are very complicated."
Nadelen: "XiamenAir lost one of my bags and has still not found it"
Voordelen: "I really liked the space in Business and the priority boardings in Asia. Worth every penny. Food was great. A lil slow on serving alcohol though. Very relaxing trip."
Nadelen: "Not much. Liked I mentioned, slow on serving the alcohol. You have to push to get a drink."
Voordelen: "The offerings of beverages and the choices were good"
Nadelen: "Lack of communication by staff. Lack of entertainment on 14 hour flight. Was told not to use device while others were able to use."
Nadelen: "The flight was delayed due to air traffic control. Subsequently I missed my connecting flight -- Xiamen to Manila that evening and had to spend another night in China. Next flight out of Xiamen was 6pm, Nov 2. Xiamen ground staff was very helpful in booking me the option to fly China Southern to Guangzhou the night of Nov 1, stay for free in a hotel, and then take the 0835 morning China Southern flight from Guangzhou to Manila. It was difficult to identify the right people to speak with and get clear assistance and direction in both Xiamen and Guangzhou."

Nadelen: "Show up and the flight was delayed 4 hours. No reason given. My layover in Xiamen was only 2 hours. They kept wanting me to fly the next day. When I complained loud enough they finally yielded and found an alternative to LAX."
Nadelen: "The delay was extremely horrible causing us to miss our flight and then put us on a flight that was once again delayed for another 6 hours. The crew was still hesitant on disclosing the time we would be leaving"
Voordelen: "The entertainment system the company provides for international flights is very nice. Movies and games keep you entertained."
Nadelen: "Flight was Shanghai to Fuzhou, 10 hour layover and Fuzhou to JFK. Our flight from Shanghai to Fuzhou was delayed for 3 hours for "inclement weather" - it was clear in Shanghai. Flight company communicated to progressive, who the flight was booked through, that the flight would be an hour late, so I received a text saying new departure time would be an hour later. This was false. After that hour the only messages we were getting at the airport were "flight is delayed, new departure time will be announced later". We arrived in Fuzhou 3 hours later, at 0300. The bus ride to the hotel provided by the airline is one hour each way, and our connecting flight was 0900, so it was a waste of time to try to get to the hotel. This means we just stayed in the airport all night and boarded our next 15 hour flight with no sleep, no shower and nothing to eat. Customer service for flight would announce turbulence every 3 minutes, even after plane was having turbulence for 10-15 minutes. This freezes entertainment. Etc etc. many other small disorganized things as well."
